With a nickname like “The Sunshine State,” it’s no surprise that Florida is a popular state for people to move to. In United Van Lines 45th Annual Movers Study, 62% of Florida’s moving traffic was inbound, a slight increase from previous years.
The moving experts at United Van Lines have created a moving to Florida checklist including tips and tricks to help ease your moving experience.
Why Are People Moving to Florida?
United Van Lines’ Annual Movers Study is based on household moves of states with 250 moves or more. In 2021, Florida was the #1 popular state people went to retire. 38.7% of its inbound traffic cited retirement as the reason, and 41.3% of inbound residents were age 65 or older.
While retirement is the number one reason people are moving to Florida, it’s not the only one. 26.8% of movers cited a lifestyle change as their reason, and 21.7% said their move was for family.
With much of the country moving to a digital landscape in 2020 and continuing in 2021, working from home while living close to the beach could be the ideal setting for a lot of people. We dig in a bit deeper about why retiring in Florida is the number one motive for a lot of people below.
Retiring in Florida
With a 1,197-mile-long coastline and the most golf courses in any state, Florida was practically designed to be an ideal place to retire.
Florida is also considered by many to be tax-friendly. According to Kiplinger, there is no state income tax, inheritance or estate tax, and no taxes on Social Security benefits in Florida. These benefits, along with the natural beauty of the state may be appealing to some retirees.
The reasons for retirement vary for everybody, and consulting with your tax and financial advisors based on your own, unique circumstances is always recommended.
The Sunshine State…Sometimes
Known for beautiful weather and sunny beaches, Florida can feel like an endless summer. It might be the Sunshine State, but there are also some not so sunny weather components.
Florida rain can pass through within 20 minutes, but can still, quite literally, put a damper on your moving day. June through November is a typical hurricane season, peaking in August and September.
